Racial discrimination: Biker spits on Manipuri girl in Mumbai amid COVID19 outbreak

Amid COVID19 outbreak, another case of racial discrimination has taken place where a miscreant spat on a girl from Manipur in Mumbai on Monday

The incident occurred at around 2:30 pm at Mumbai’s Kalina Market area.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident.

The NCW said it will look into the incident and will take appropriate action.

Terming the incident a ‘racial discrimination’ amid Coronavirus outbreak, the NCW tweeted: “Yet another case of racial discrimination amid #COVID19outbreak, a miscreant spat on a northeastern girl at Kalina Market area in Mumbai. NCW will look into this matter for appropriate action.”

The NCW also tagged a facebook link where it was alleged: “A North East girl from Manipur is the new victim again here in Mumbai. This happened just an hour ago. A biker came and spat on her.”

The Facebook post was shared at 3:17 pm on Sunday.

The facebook user also stated: “Mumbai is one of the most peaceful and safest place for North-East people and this was never expected.”

“Just because of few pathetic people like him, the entire city name is getting spoiled and people are feeling insecure,” the Facebook post read.

It may be mentioned that in a similar case in March, another woman from the Northeast was spat by a persons in Delhi and called her ‘Corona’.

The incident took place at Vijaya Nagar area where a girl from Manipur was spat on by a motor bike-borne man.

Later, the police arrested the accused involved in the act.

Following reports of harassment of people from Northeast after COVID19 outbreak, the Union home ministry asked law-enforcing agencies to take action against anybody found harassing people from the region.

The directive from the Union Home ministry came following reports of several incidents of racial discrimination against people from Northeast living in Delhi after the Coronavirus outbreak.

Through the directive, the chief secretaries and DGPs of all states and union territories were asked to take action for harassing Northeast people.

The home ministry, while stating that “this is racially discriminatory, inconvenient and painful to them”, asked the state governments to sensitise all the law-enforcing agencies and take appropriate action if any cases of harassment are reported.
