People of Sugnu area in Manipur’s Kakching district have staged a protest demanding that the accused in a recent incident of sexual harassment of a five-year-old girl be accorded harsh punishment.
The locals held a public meeting at the local public ground in Sugnu, where they resolved to exert pressure on the authorities concerned to accord harsh punishment to the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.
They have also demanded adequate compensation for the rehabilitation of the accused.

A report stated they also formed a joint action committee to implement the resolutions they have made.
The incident occurred on December 4 when the accused, Oinam Nanao Meitei (29) had arrived at the workshop of the victim’s father to repair his truck.
He reportedly took the minor with him to a secluded spot on the pretext of purchasing sweets from a shop nearby and sexually assaulted her.
Hearing the child’s cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and caught the 29-year-old trucker and later handed him over to the local police.
The police have booked a case against the accused under the POCSO Act.
The locals also urged local MLA and Kakching district police SP to assist the joint action committee in delivering justice to the family of the victim.
