Guwahati: After nearly 77 days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement on the ongoing Manipur violence stating that the 140 crore Indians were put to shame by an incident where two women were paraded on May 4.

While the incident is nearly two months old, the Prime Minister made a statement only after the video of the victims surfaced online.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address expressed deep “anguish” and promised that the culprits would face the full force of the law.

PM Modi said that his heart has been “full of pain and anger” following the incident.

“What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven”, he added.

The PM further assured that justice would prevail and no guilty party involved in this heinous crime would be spared.

He also urged all the Chief Ministers in the country to ensure that law & order is strictly maintained in their states.

It may be mentioned that on Thursday, the main accused, identified as Heradas (32), was arrested in Thoubal district.

He was traced based on the viral video in which he was seen wearing a green T-shirt.

Following the video going viral, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also reached out to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to take stock of the situation.

On Wednesday, a disturbing incident of sexual assault in Manipur ignited widespread outrage after a video surfaced showing two Kuki women being paraded naked on a road by a group of men from the Meitei community.

The victims had allegedly been subjected to gang rape in a nearby field.

The distressing video depicts a mob of men relentlessly molesting helpless women as they are forcibly taken toward a paddy field. Throughout the ordeal, the victims can be heard crying out for help.

According to a statement released by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), the incident took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, located approximately 35 km from the state capital, Imphal. However, the Manipur police stated that the incident occurred in a different district, although the first information report (FIR) was filed in Kangpokpi.
