The Indian Weightlifting Federation’s (IWLF) secretary general Sahdev Yadav said weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will fight for gold medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Yadav’s statement comes after the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) published its absolute list of weightlifters for participation in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 where Chanu was placed second.

She will participate in Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the women’s 49 kg category.

Mirabai Chanu has earned 4133,6172 points.

A media report quoted IWLF secretary general Sahdev Yadav as saying:  “It’s very good news for the federation after a long time we have got this opportunity. Last time in Rio Olympics we had this chance but we didn’t get success at that time. Mira has worked hard in the last four years and I am sure this time she will get the success and will fight for gold.”

A day after the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) published its absolute list of weightlifters for Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has wished its employee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu a success in the great event.

“Northeast Frontier Railway @RailMinIndia wishes success for its employee #TOPS Athlete weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on the podium of #Tokyo2020 after the Absolute Ranking list published by @iwfnet
where she is placed 2nd in the women’s 49 kg,” the NFR wrote on its Twitter handle on Sunday.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who hails from Manipur, booked her place for the Tokyo Olympics by winning a bronze medal in the Asian Championship in April with a world record in clean and jerk.

The 26-year-old player has now qualified on the basis of her standings on IWF’s absolute ranking.

“Many congratulations to #TOPSAthlete weightlifter @mirabai_chanu who has qualified for #Tokyo2020 after @iwfnet published its Absolute Ranking list where she is placed 2nd in the women’s 49 kg,” the Sports Authority of India (SAI) wrote on its Twitter handle.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 is slated to commence on July 23 and the mega event will run up to August 8 this year.
