Agitating students of NEHU in Shillong have refused to end their indefinite hunger strike, which is now on its 16th day.

Shillong: The turmoil at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) continues to escalate, with the indefinite hunger strike by the NEHUSU and NEHU KSU entering its 14th day on Monday.

Agitating students remain steadfast in their demand for the removal of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. This ongoing protest has forced the university to consider postponing PG and professional course examinations to February 2024, following the winter break.

NEHU’s in-charge VC, Prof. Nirmalendu Saha, acknowledged the challenges posed by the situation and the two-week disruption of classes. He stated that the Academic Council will convene an urgent meeting to finalize a revised academic calendar.

Prof. Saha emphasized his commitment to restoring normalcy at NEHU and prioritizing the well-being of students.

He has engaged with student organizations and assured them of his support. Despite concerns over the health of the hunger strikers, he expressed hope for a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

NEHU’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Carol Mukhim, urged the students to end the hunger strike, citing their deteriorating health.

She highlighted the critical condition of NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun, who has been discharged but refuses to eat. Dr. Mukhim appealed to the state government to intervene and address the students’ demands.

The Mawlai Town Dorbar also met with the protesting students, urging them to reconsider their stance. However, the students remained resolute in their demand for the VC’s removal.
