Guwahati: The highly anticipated Manipuri feature film “Oneness,” directed by Priyakanta Laishram, is set to make a splash on the international stage at the prestigious KASHISH Pride Film Festival 2024.
The festival, known as the biggest celebration of queer cinema in South Asia, will host the film’s world premiere, marking a significant milestone for both the movie and Manipuri cinema.
“Oneness” holds a special place in Laishram’s journey, not only for being his directorial debut but also for being the first Manipuri film to center on a same-sex love story. Scheduled for May 15th to 19th in Mumbai, the film will be the sole representative of queer cinema from Northeast India at the festival this year.
The director expressed his elation at the film’s upcoming premiere, acknowledging the challenges faced during production.
“The past two years have been a whirlwind, We’ve encountered obstacles like violence in Manipur and resistance from certain groups due to the film’s theme. But we persevered, and I’m thrilled to finally share ‘Oneness’ with the world. KASHISH was the first festival I approached, and I’m grateful they selected the film,” Laishram shared.
Produced by Laishram himself alongside Roushil Singla, “Oneness” boasts a talented ensemble cast featuring Maya Choudhury, Suraj Ngashepam, Sachinker Sagolsem, Harendra Laishram, Ramva Leishangthem, Rojesh Saikhom, and Laishram himself. This project signifies Laishram’s official entry into the world of feature filmmaking under his banner, Priyakanta Productions.
“Oneness” delves into the complexities of love and relationships within the social fabric of Manipur. It sheds light on the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the region, aiming to spark conversations that challenge societal norms and foster acceptance and understanding.
