Imphal: The Manipur police have registered a zero FIR against the Kuki National Front-Military Council (KNF-MC) for erecting a gate at Thangjing Hill, a protected forest and historical site.
The complaint, filed by the Land Resources Department of the Manipur government, alleges unauthorized naming and activity on government-protected land.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, taking to social media platform X, said the government’s commitment to protecting historical sites and established place names. He said the Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024, under which a case was registered for renaming a portion of Thangjing Hill to “Thangting.”
Thangjing Hill, a revered pilgrimage site in the Northeast, holds significance for followers of the Sanamahi religion. Devotees traditionally ascend the peak to offer prayers at the main temple dedicated to God Thangching.
The complaint, lodged by Under Secretary (Land Resources) Mangoljao Kamei, details the erection of a gate bearing the KNF-MC inscription alongside the name “Thangting,” which misrepresents the established name “Thangjing Ching.”
The report said that Thangjing Hill falls within the Churachandpur-Khoupum Protected Forests, notified in 1966 under the Indian Forest Act. Additionally, the Manipur government’s Art and Culture department declared it a protected historical site under the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976.
Given the location of the activity falling under Henglep Police Station’s jurisdiction, a zero FIR has been registered at Imphal Police Station to facilitate an investigation.
The report references relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Indian Forest Act, and the Manipur Names of Places Act.
