A wildfire that reportedly broke out last night, has destroyed half of the Shirui peak in Manipur.

Shirui peak is home to the endangered Shirui lily, the State flower of Manipur.

The Shirui Hill in Ukhrul district is home to a rich biodiversity, including the famous Shirui lily and other flora and fauna.

Reports said that the wildfire broke out at the lower part of the hill around 1 pm on Friday and rapidly spread towards the top.

Fire-fighters stationed at the Ukhrul district headquarters rushed to the spot, along with officials of the district administration and the Forest office to control the fire with the help of villagers.

The fire was put under control late in the night.

However, about half of the peak has been destroyed by the wildfire, reports said.

Officials of the State forest department and villagers were clueless about the origin of the fire.
