The wildfire has engulfed Mt. Esii and the Khongho ranges.

Imphal: A wildfire that began in the southern stretch of Dzukou Valley in Nagalandโ€™s Kohima district has now spread to the highest peak of Manipur, Mt. Esii in Senapati district, and continues to burn uncontrollably. The blaze, active since Monday, has consumed large swathes of forest, posing a serious threat to the regionโ€™s fragile environment.

In response to the spreading fire, Senapati district commissioner Mamoni Doley, IAS, issued an advisory on Thursday suspending all trekking activity in the area. She confirmed that specialized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Fire and Rescue Force (SFRF) have been deployed for firefighting operations.

The wildfire has engulfed Mt. Esii and the Khongho ranges, raising concerns over public safety. Local associations and clubs, including the Song-Song Youth and Students Organisation (SSYSO), along with nearby villagers, have mobilized residents to contain the fire, but controlling it remains a daunting challenge.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though officials suspect it may be man-made given the scale and pattern of the blaze. The Mao Council, representing the Mao Naga community in Senapati, expressed deep anguish over the devastation. In a statement, the council appealed to the government and relevant authorities to take immediate and effective measures to douse the fire, prevent further spread, and protect the sacred Mt. Esii.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland government evacuated more than 30 trekkers from high-altitude zones to safety. Operations to contain the blaze were conducted jointly by the district administration and the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO).
