Three bodies of Manipur University (MU) have condemned the alleged handcuffing of an arrested university professor while being taken to a hospital.

The joint action committee of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) in a statement on Sunday said they considered the action as an โ€œinsulting treatment to members of the university community.โ€

Police confirmed that the professor had been handcuffed and added that rules were observed in this case.

โ€œIrrespective of charges, an accused is handcuffed while being taken to a hospital,โ€ a news agency quoted an unnamed police official as saying.

Manipur police on September 21 arrested 89 students of Manipur University and six teachers for acting against the new vice-chancellor and not allowing him to enter the university campus.

The arrests were made following a complaint made by the vice-chancellor of the university, professor K. Yugindro, at Singjamei police station against 31 members of the MUSA and MUTA.
