Imphal: A person was killed in a bomb explosion at Singjamei Bazar in Manipur’s Imphal West district during the intervening night of May 14 and 15, causing panic among residents and shopkeepers, police said.

The explosion occurred around midnight in the busy market area located within the Singjamei Assembly constituency, which is represented by the Manipur Chief Minister.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased, who had arrived on a two-wheeler, may have been transporting the explosive device when it detonated prematurely.

The body was shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital, Imphal, for post-mortem examination and identification.

The motorcycle was impounded for forensic examination, and a case has been registered.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
