Manipur government on Sunday signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) with the Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh during the valedictory occasion of India International Cooperatives Trade Fair (IICTF), 2019 in New Delhi.

State cooperation minister Nemcha Kipgen signed the MoI on behalf of the Manipur government while Bangladesh was represented by its Secretary Md Gyas Uddin Ahmed, said a DIPR Manipur press release.

The MoI is intended to build mutual business cooperation mainly in cooperative sector between Manipur and Bangladesh so as to learn, assimilate and develop further on the strengths, experiences and objectives of the respective parties in the interest of trade and business.

Minister Nemcha expressed that the MoI signed on Sunday will definitely expand and open wide scopes for the Manipur cooperatives to spread its trade to the other neighbouring countries in future as well.

Manipur’s handloom and handicrafts products are widely known in the world for its fine and unique quality, she asserted.

So far Manipur and Mizoram have already signed the MoI among the northeastern states of India, DIPR Manipur sources added.

According to reports, the Manipur government has come up with various new schemes to energise the cooperative sector in the state.

At present, there are 10, 916 cooperative societies in Manipur having 8,06,105 members in all the 16 districts of the state.

Though Manipur belongs to the least developed states in cooperative movement, some of the cooperatives categories like handloom & handicraft, transport, dairy, agriculture, horticulture, thrift and credit, fisheries, piggery and poultry are working at the best level.
