Imphal: Manipurโs Home Department is compiling data on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), including deaths, housing, and terminal illnesses in relief camps, following an RTI filed by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committeeโs Hareshwar Goshwami.
As of March 30, 2026, 217 deaths are linked to violence, with 58,881 IDPs and significant destruction of housing reported, along with over 30 missing cases.
The Manipur State Information Officer has directed the Home Department to collect all necessary reports from the respective District Commissioners (DCs) and furnish information on the total number of IDPs who have died in relief camps, the number of IDPs residing in pre-fabricated houses and relief camps, and the number of inmates suffering from terminal illnesses, along with details of assistance provided for their treatment.
The directives were issued in response to an RTI application filed by Hareshwar Goshwami, vice-president of the MPCC. According to the Congress leader, the replies to these queries are expected to be provided by the first week of May 2026. The RTI application was submitted on September 8, 2025.
Of the nine questions raised in the RTI, replies to five have been issued so far, Hareshwar Goshwami told the media in Imphal. Responding to the information sought by the MPCC vice-president, the Manipur Home Department stated that 217 deaths are linked to the violence, based on ex gratia payments made to the next of kin.
The total number of IDPs since the beginning of the Manipur crisis on May 3, 2023, stands at 58,881 as of March 30, 2026. A total of 7,894 houses have been permanently destroyed, and 2,646 have been partially damaged since the outbreak of violence.
While the RTI did not specifically inquire about missing documentation, it has been reported that over 30 cases of records are missing. Regarding financial aid, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved Rs 424.36 crore for the operation of relief camps.
Under the special package for rehabilitation and resettlement, the MHA approved Rs 523 crore and released Rs 124.50 crore, while an additional Rs 65.1635 crore was released to the DCs.
Furthermore, Rs 14.2 crore was released for the purchase of mattresses and personal items under the state scheme.
