Guwahati: The All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) is reportedly facing severe backlash after organising a rock concert at a government sports complex in the state’s capital Imphal on Patriots’ Day, a significant occasion honouring the Manipuri heroes who sacrificed their lives during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur war.

The concert, held at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, has drawn widespread criticism for its timing and location, with many accusing the organisers of disrespecting the historical importance of the day.

Patriots’ Day is a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the fallen heroes, particularly Prince Bir Tikendrajit Singh and General Thangal, who were executed by the British on August 13, 1891 for their roles in resisting colonial rule.

The state’s Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) minister Govindas Konthoujam expressed outrage over the unauthorised event, pledging legal action against those responsible.

Director of YAS, T Phulen Meitei, has since lodged a formal complaint with the officer in-charge (OC) of Imphal Police Station accusing AMFA of violating the law by proceeding with the concert without necessary permissions from relevant authorities, including the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and himself.

In the complaint, Meitei has alleged that the event disrupted peace and tranquility on a day meant for solemn remembrance. The AMFA is also accused of contributing to noise pollution, having failed to obtain approval from the Manipur Pollution Control Board.

Additionally, reports suggest that many attendees, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, caused disturbances, further disrespecting the sanctity of the day. Civil society groups have joined the chorus of condemnation, calling AMFA’s actions an affront to the memory of the state’s martyrs.

Meitei in the complaint has urged immediate legal action against AMFA’s executive members and others involved in organising the event. Adding to the controversy, sources claim that a rebel group has taken the organisers, members of the performing bands, and other individuals into custody in connection with the concert, raising concerns over escalating tensions.

The armed group also reportedly asked one of the rock singers to shave off his hair as a punishment. The incident has sparked a broader debate on the importance of understanding and respecting historical significance and patriotism, especially on days of national importance.
