The agitation erupted after the Naga People’s Front (NPF), an alliance partner of the BJP-led government in the state, along with the Naga students’ bodies objected to the proposal for fencing the Indo-Myanmar border in the Naga-dominated areas of Manipur.

Additionally, two Naga students’ bodies – Southern Tangkhul Students’ Unions and Eastern Tangkhul Students’ Union have jointly expressed strong opposition against continuing the border fencing works and also against scrapping the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
