Imphal: A primary school was destroyed in a fire after security forces exchanged gunfire with armed miscreants in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Monday, police said.
The incident took place around 5 am in Lhunjang village, where armed miscreants allegedly approached with the intention of launching an attack. Security personnel stationed in the village, including personnel from the Manipur Rifles and India Reserve Battalion (IRB), retaliated, triggering a gunfight that lasted around 30 minutes.
No casualties or injuries were reported in the exchange of fire.
According to police, the miscreants fled the area after the firefight and allegedly set fire to the Lhunjang Primary School while retreating. The school building was completely gutted in the blaze.
Lhunjang, a village with around 40 residents, is located approximately 12 kilometres from Chalwa Police Station.
Police have yet to establish the identity or affiliation of those involved in the attack. An investigation into the incident is underway.
The destruction of the school has once again highlighted concerns over the impact of the prolonged conflict in Manipur on civilians and essential public infrastructure, particularly educational facilities.
