Imphal: A joint team of central and state forces arrested eight cadres of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and recovered Rs 39 lakh in extorted money from them, officials reported on Sunday.
The money was allegedly extorted from contract nurses at a state-run hospital.
Following an investigation into a First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Porompat Police Station in Imphal East district, concerning the extortion of money from contract staff nurses at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Manipur Police on March 13, 2026, arrested four individuals involved in the crime.
The arrests were made at their respective residences in Imphal West district. The arrested individuals include Khoisnam Roger, 29, and Khoisnam Byron, 23, both of Malom Tuliyaima Mamang Leikai; Sinam Umakanta Singh, 43, of Changangei Makha Leikai; and RK Heramot Singh, 45, of Lamboi Khongnangkhong Mayai Leikai.
From their possession, Rs 39,00,000 (thirty-nine lakh) in cash, six mobile phones, and one pistol were recovered. Reports added that the arrested individuals committed the crime at the behest of the KCP (Taibangnganba) outfit, collecting money from the JNIMS contract staff and transferring it to the underground organization.
The arrests and seizures were made based on interrogation reports from active cadres of KCP (Taibangnganba), identified as Ningthoujam Thoi Leima, alias Sundari, 41, of Arong Khunou Awang Leikai, and Ningthoujam Hemanta Singh, alias Naocha, 28, of Thoubal Kshetri Leikai.
They were arrested from the Thoubal Wangma Taba area under Thoubal Police Station in Thoubal district. From their possession, 140 rounds of 9 mm ammunition and two mobile phones were seized.
In a separate combing operation, security forces arrested an active cadre of KCP along with a mobile phone from Thangal Bazar. He was identified as Moirangthem Hemba Singh, 26, also known as Laiba, of Pungdongbam Mayai Leikai, Imphal East district.
Finally, Manipur Police arrested another active cadre of KCP, Naorem Yaiphaba Singh, alias Keipha, 20, from Chanura Bazar under Nambol Police Station, Bishnupur district.
All arrestees and seized items have been handed over to the relevant police stations for further legal proceedings.
