Imphal: A one-year-old boy sustained injuries after being hit by a stray bullet on his head at a rented house near the District Commissionerโ€™s office in Manipur’s Imphal West district under Lamphel police station on Thursday, officials said on Friday.

The child suffered the head injury around 4 pm when a stray bullet struck him. He was immediately rushed to RIMS Hospital, Imphal, and later transferred to a local clinic near the Inter-State Bus Terminus, where an emergency operation was performed.

Doctors said a .32-caliber projectile was successfully removed during the surgery. The childโ€™s condition is currently stable.

Reports stated that two gunshots were heard around 4 pm during a football match at Naoremthong Pholem Leikai near the DC office.

Family members said the bullet reportedly pierced a tin shed on the roof, which may have reduced its impact.

The boyโ€™s parents work and live in Imphal in a rented house as internally displaced persons following the ethnic violence that erupted across the state on May 3, 2023.

Police are investigating the source of the gunfire, and a case has been registered.
