Imphal: A man was killed on the spot, and another sustained serious injuries after they were struck by lightning in a forested area of Manipurโs southern Churachandpur district on Sunday evening, officials reported on Monday.
The incident occurred around 5:30 pm when the duo was gathering vegetables near Buallian village. Goukhanmung (39), son of H. Dingzakam from Vengnuam, died instantly, while Phungzalian, son of L. Lamdouthang, sustained serious injuries.
Both were residents of Vengnuam village and belonged to the Kuki-Zo tribal community.
The body of the deceased was taken to Churachandpur District Hospital, while the injured person was rushed for medical treatment.
Manipur is currently experiencing intense pre-monsoon activity, with widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30โ40 kmph) expected from April 25 to 30, 2026.
Isolated very heavy rainfall is forecast for all districts, including Churachandpur, during this period, increasing the risk of landslides and waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state.
