Imphal: A Kuki civil society working committee has enforced an indefinite counter-blockade on National Highway-202 at Chassad in Manipur’s Kamjong district following the expiration of a 36-hour administrative ultimatum.
The blockade, which began at noon on Wednesday, follows allegations by Kuki groups of a six-month-long economic embargo imposed by sections of the Tangkhul Naga community, a claim that has not been independently verified.
Reports indicate that women volunteers have begun inspecting vehicles and confiscating essential commodities, though emergency services, medical supplies, telecom, electricity departments and military convoys remain exempt.
Local administration and police officials are currently engaging with both communities to defuse the situation.
Concurrently, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has directed all regional civil society organisations to halt the burial of any community members allegedly killed by Naga armed groups.
The directive mandates that the remains of victims be preserved in cold-storage facilities as a collective measure of protest against ongoing violence and perceived administrative inaction.
The order coincided with the killing of two Kuki-Zo women and the arson of several farmhouses at Leisangphai in Tamenglong district on Tuesday.
This incident follows a separate attack on September 13 that claimed four lives across Tamenglong and Noney districts, bringing the recent death toll to six.
While Kuki organisations attribute the violence to Naga insurgent factions, police authorities state that the perpetrators remain unidentified and investigations are ongoing.
