Imphal: Manipur Police have arrested Sahid Shah (35), a warder at Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, in Imphal East district, for allegedly running a racket involving the supply of mobile phones to inmates and facilitating their unauthorized use.
Shah, a resident of Kairang Mayai Leikai, Imphal East district, was produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East, on February 19, 2026.
An Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the State submitted a report stating that the accused was arrested on February 18 on charges of illegally facilitating mobile phone use by inmates, including those booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Multiple mobile phones and SIM cards were seized from Shah’s possession.
During interrogation, the accused admitted to the charges leveled against him, the APP said. Furthermore, the investigation established that financial transactions were carried out from within the jail premises by inmates using the warder’s UPI account.
The prosecution prayed for police custody to ascertain the full extent of his involvement and to identify other individuals connected to the case. After hearing the submission, the Court remanded the accused to judicial custody until February 25.
