Imphal: A tense atmosphere gripped the Saina Institute of Medical Sciences in Manipur‘s Imphal East on Saturday after a bomb was discovered on the hospital’s reception desk.

Staff and patients were evacuated as bomb disposal experts arrived to remove the device safely.

Police received a report around 10:30 am of a suspicious package left at the hospital, said an official.

The Manipur police bomb detection and disposal squad quickly responded and identified the object as a hand grenade concealed inside a black plastic bag, he said.

This incident follows reports of a similar grenade placement at the same location by an unidentified underground group demanding money from the hospital.

The institute, situated between Porompat police station and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, has become a target for extortion.

Fortunately, the bomb disposal squad successfully deactivated the explosive device. Manipur police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
