Imphal: The Manipur government on Thursday said it is steadily progressing with the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the state.
In an official statement, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel said the government has been regularly updating the public on rehabilitation efforts and remains committed to the safe and timely resettlement of all displaced families.
The statement followed a call by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) for a mass rally in Imphal on January 31, alleging that the Centreโs policies are undermining Manipurโs peace and territorial integrity. COCOMI has urged people from all communities to participate in the Manipur Kanba Khongchat (Save Manipur Rally).
The Chief Secretary said a state-level committee, chaired by him and comprising senior officials including the Commissioner (Home) and the Director General of Police, has been constituted to monitor the rehabilitation process. District-level committees led by respective district magistrates are also in place and are conducting regular reviews.
The government said its objective is not limited to relocating IDPs from relief camps but to ensure a gradual and secure return to stable living conditions, livelihoods, education, and normal community life.
According to the statement, by December 2025, over 2,200 families comprising around 10,000 IDPs had been resettled. As of January 2026, the number has risen to about 3,700 families, covering nearly 16,500 IDPs.
To support reconstruction, around 7,000 houses have been sanctioned under the Special Pradhan Mantri Awas YojanaโGramin (PMAY-G) for fully damaged homes, with construction at various stages of completion.
The government has so far released approximately Rs 1,124 crore for IDP resettlement across the state. It aims to rehabilitate more than 10,000 displaced families, affecting over 40,000 people, by March 31, 2026.
Ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 3, 2023, has claimed over 260 lives, displaced nearly 62,000 people, and destroyed more than 8,000 houses.
