Guwahati: The Manipur government has resettled around 10,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from over 2,200 families, while construction of nearly 4,000 additional houses for rehabilitation is underway, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel said on Tuesday.

In an official statement, Goel said the government has been holding regular meetings at various levels with representatives of displaced families to address their concerns related to resettlement and allied issues.

The statement said the state administration is simultaneously implementing security measures and confidence-building initiatives at both state and district levels to ensure a safe environment for returning families and to rebuild trust among communities.

By addressing financial assistance and security arrangements in parallel, the government aims to facilitate a smooth and secure return of displaced families to their native places, it said.

The release noted that 54 IDPs were resettled in their village in Imphal East district in November, followed by the return of around 257 IDPs from the Leimaram High School Relief Camp to Leimaram Waroiching village in Bishnupur district on December 4.

To strengthen rehabilitation efforts, the state government has recently constituted state-level and district-level committees with immediate effect to oversee the resettlement process, the statement said.

Since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, over 250 people have lost their lives and more than 50,000 have been displaced.

Reiterating its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of displaced persons, the government said it continues to provide essential assistance in relief camps, including food, rations and drinking water, with support from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
