Guwahati: Incessant rains lashing Manipur for the second day due to Cyclone Remal have transformed many areas into flooded landscapes.
The situation is particularly critical in two major medical institutes, where floodwaters have inundated the campuses.
Both the central government-run Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal West and the state government-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East have experienced flooding on the ground floors of their hospital wards. With these areas submerged, most patients have been shifted to higher floors for continued treatment.
RIMS is the most severely affected facility. The floodwaters have forced the closure of 40% of its services, and stagnant water is causing significant hardship for patients and caregivers. Doctors and nurses working in the hospitals described a chaotic situation, with overflowing drains adding to the problems created by rainwater, causing inconvenience and disruption to patient care.
Officials have reported that many laboratory and diagnostic services have been halted due to the flooding.
The floodwaters pose a double threat: directly damaging hospital infrastructure and equipment, and disrupting access to essential services for patients.
