Guwahati: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has condemned the June 10 attack on his convoy as deeply concerning.
Singh expressed dismay over the incident, calling it a serious breach of security within his own state.
“Yes, it is a matter of shame for me that my security convoy was attacked in my own state and I feel the worst about this,” India Today quoted Singh as saying.
He said that the Chief Secretary has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the attack.
“The manner in which the attackers were informed about the convoy’s route is under investigation,” Singh stated, highlighting the need to determine how militants acquired such sensitive information.
The ambush occurred in Kangpokpi district as the convoy was en route to the troubled Jiribam district. The attackers fired multiple gunshots at security vehicles, prompting retaliatory measures.
One convoy vehicle’s driver sustained a bullet injury to his shoulder and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Manipur has been grappling with ongoing violence, particularly stemming from ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023. The unrest has claimed the lives of over 219 individuals.
Singh acknowledged recent sporadic violence but indicated some improvement in the state’s security situation following the central government’s deployment of security forces.
“While the situation has improved since the initial outbreak of violence, complete cessation of such incidents will require sustained efforts,” Singh said.
He emphasized the necessity for political dialogue and described the violence as primarily between illegal immigrants and terrorists from Myanmar involved in illicit activities within Manipur.
