Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has expressed serious concern over reported armed attacks in border villages of Manipurโ€™s Kamjong district along the Indo-Myanmar international border, demanding immediate intervention by the Government of India.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the organisation said villages including Namlee, Wanglee and adjoining areas came under attack in the early hours of May 6. It described the incident as having taken an โ€œextremely serious dimensionโ€ after a sitting MLA from the border region allegedly claimed that the attackers were cadres of the Myanmar-based Kuki National Army (KNA-B) along with allied Peopleโ€™s Defence Forces (PDF).

COCOMI said that if the allegations are verified, the incident cannot be viewed merely as an ethnic clash or communal violence, but as a case of cross-border armed aggression involving foreign-based armed groups targeting Indian citizens within Indian territory.

The organisation said such developments directly concern national sovereignty, territorial integrity, border security and internal security.

Raising questions over the security situation along the Indo-Myanmar border, COCOMI flagged concerns over alleged lapses in surveillance, intelligence gathering and deployment of security forces despite prolonged unrest in Manipur since May 2023.

It also questioned how heavily armed groups were able to allegedly infiltrate and operate in sensitive hill areas bordering Myanmar despite the presence of central security forces in the state.

COCOMI has demanded a high-level and transparent inquiry into the incident, strengthening of security measures in vulnerable border areas, investigation into the alleged involvement of cross-border militant groups, and a clear public statement from the Government of India on the nature of the attacks and border security situation.

It further warned that failure to address such incidents could destabilise already fragile border communities and erode public confidence in the stateโ€™s ability to safeguard citizens and territorial integrity.
