COCOMI backed the UNC economic blockade, citing Kanto Sabal violence and demanding action over Naga killings.

Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an umbrella body of several Meitei civil society organisations, has extended its support to the United Naga Council‘s (UNC) ongoing inter-district economic blockade, citing the recent violence at Kanto Sabal and growing security concerns.

In a statement issued on Monday, COCOMI said it was endorsing the blockade following the torching of six Meitei houses at Kanto Sabal, an area located along the Imphal Westโ€“Kangpokpi district boundary. The organisation alleged that the attack was carried out by “narco-terrorists.”

The UNC launched the indefinite inter-district economic blockade on May 17, 2026, following the alleged abduction of 18 Naga civilians on May 13. The bodies of six of those abducted were later recovered on June 10, intensifying tensions in the state.

The council has demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the abduction and killings, the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, and the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen.

The UNC has also sought to have the Kuki National Front-President (KNF-P) declared a terrorist organisation and called for the arrest of its members allegedly linked to the killings of the six Naga civilians.

Additionally, the council has demanded the removal of Nemcha Kipgen, alleging that her husband, who is the president of the KNF-P, is connected to the incident.

Meanwhile, the continuing blockade has disrupted the movement of essential commodities, with reports indicating that Kuki-Zo-inhabited hill districts, particularly Kangpokpi, are facing an acute humanitarian situation due to shortages of supplies and restricted transport.

The blockade continues amid heightened tensions, with no immediate resolution in sight.
