Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday met representatives of civil society organisations from Ukhrul district at his office, amid efforts to restore peace following recurring clashes between Naga and Kuki communities that have led to injuries and damage to property.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said a delegation from Tangkhul Avenue, Imphal, led by MLA Khasim Vashum and chairman M. Ngaranmi, called on him at the Secretariat and raised concerns related to the interests and safeguards of the Tangkhul community. The delegation also emphasised the need for inclusive and balanced development.
The Chief Minister reiterated the governmentโs commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all communities while working towards peace and stability in the state. He stressed that violence has no place in efforts to build a harmonious and progressive Manipur.
The meeting follows a March 25 initiative in which Tangkhul Naga MLAs Ram Muivah and Leishiyo Keishing held discussions with community leaders at the Tangkhul Naga Long office in Wino Bazar. The talks focused on identifying ways to ease tensions and prevent further violence.
The two legislators also met Kuki civil society organisations and village leaders at Shangkai village to seek inputs for an amicable resolution. They are expected to urge the government to ensure the safety of commuters along the ImphalโUkhrul road.
Tensions between the two communities escalated following a February 7 incident in Litan, where a Tangkhul Naga man was allegedly assaulted, triggering a series of confrontations. The violence resulted in the torching of more than 50 houses belonging to both communities in Ukhrul district.
Officials said the situation remains volatile, with intermittent firing reported from some areas, posing risks to civilian safety.
