Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) to review the state’s strategy against drug trafficking and substance abuse, with a focus on strengthening enforcement and inter-agency coordination.

The meeting, held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, was attended by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, the Security Adviser, and senior representatives of the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Officials reviewed ongoing enforcement measures and discussed ways to improve intelligence sharing, coordination among security agencies and mechanisms to curb the trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Following the meeting, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the drug trade. “The Government of Manipur remains firmly committed to dismantling drug networks and advancing a drug-free Manipur,” he said.

The review comes amid continuing concerns over drug trafficking along the state’s 398-km border with Myanmar, much of which remains unfenced. Security agencies have previously flagged the region’s proximity to the Golden Triangle as a factor contributing to the movement of heroin, methamphetamine and other narcotics through the state.

Officials have also highlighted challenges posed by illegal transit routes allegedly used for the movement of narcotics and concerns over the smuggling of precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs.

The NCORD meeting concluded with a decision to strengthen ground-level intelligence gathering, improve coordination among agencies and intensify enforcement measures aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
