Guwahati: The Kuki Inpi Manipur has strongly condemned the killing of two civilians in an ambush near TM Kasom in Ukhrul district, describing the incident as โ€œdeeply disturbingโ€ and โ€œunwarrantedโ€, and called for a thorough investigation into the attack.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the organisation expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families, while denouncing the incident as a heinous act against civilians.

The Kuki body said it has consistently urged restraint despite what it described as repeated provocations and attempts to create discord between the Kuki and Tangkhul communities following the Litan incident. It alleged that Kukis in areas such as Sinakeithel and Litan had faced targeted attacks but had refrained from retaliatory action to avoid escalation of tensions.

It further stated that, despite earlier incidents including the killing of two individuals at Thowai, the community had chosen not to retaliate in order to prevent a wider conflict.

The organisation also expressed concern over statements by the United Naga Council and the Tangkhul Naga Long, which it said had attributed responsibility for the ambush to the Kuki community without evidence. It termed such allegations as unjust and socially divisive.

Referring to the security situation in the area, the statement claimed that multiple armed groups, including valley-based insurgent groups and elements such as Arambai Tenggol, were active in and around Sinakeithel and Litan, potentially contributing to heightened tensions.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur has called for a time-bound and impartial probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA)into the incident. It said that those responsible must be brought to justice, irrespective of community affiliation.

Reiterating its position, the organisation said it would not shield or support any individual involved in violence against civilians, and stressed the need for peace, accountability and justice in the state.
