Imphal: A 23-year-old man was injured when suspected militants shot him in Manipur‘s Bishnupur district on Saturday night. The identity of the attackers is not yet confirmed.
A proscribed underground group claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday.
A police team from Moirang Police Station has begun investigating the shooting. Reports suggest the incident might be linked to a human trafficking ring operating between Imphal and Bengaluru.
On Saturday night, around 9 pm, Chanam Chandrakumar (23), a resident of Khongmal Zone V in Imphal East district, was found with a gunshot wound to his left leg near the Community Health Centre in Moirang, Bishnupur district.
He received first aid at the health center before being transferred to a hospital in Imphal by Moirang police.
A banned militant group, the Kangleipak Communist Party – Nongdrenkhomba (KCP-N), claimed responsibility for the shooting through its commander, Lakpa.
The group also allegedly presented Chandrakumar before media persons in Bishnupur, where he reportedly confessed to involvement in human trafficking.
Manipur police have confirmed an investigation into the reported human trafficking network.
