The indefinite shutdown by Manipur University students continues to hit the normal functioning of the University for the seventh day on Thursday.

Initially the shutdown was imposed in and around the administrative block for three days since May 31 demanding resignation of VC Prof Pandey. But it was later intensified in all the departments and other centres.

The agitating students accused the VC of hampering the academic atmosphere and failing to take up any development initiative for the university. The students of the university are demanding immediate replacement of the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey. They are also demanding white paper on Indian Science Congress held in March this year and recruitment of the required faculties.

The entire Canchipur campus of the university, 5 km south of Imphal which was usually filled up with a number of academic activities apart from their normal classes, wore deserted look when Northeast Now visited the university.

All the departments and various centres of the university and the main administrative block including the Vice Chancellor’s office were found under lock and key.

Though the offices of State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda branches located inside the campus remained closed on Wednesday but reopened on Thursday.

The security personnel and few students who stayed at the hostel of the university and some of the agitating students were seen in and around the campus.

Meanwhile Communist Party of India Manipur state unit has extended its support to the agitation of the students.

VC Prof Pandey could not be contacted for his comment till the filing of the report.
