Guwahati: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh strongly condemned reports of racial harassment and assault involving two Northeastern residents near the Saket District Court Complex in New Delhi on March 9.
He called the incident unacceptable and urged authorities to take prompt action.
Singh expressed deep concern over reports that a woman from Manipur and a transgender individual from Assam were allegedly attacked by a group of men near the court complex. He stressed that people from the Northeast should feel safe and respected across the country.
In a social media post, Singh described the acts as โcompletely unacceptableโ and said violence or racial bias against Northeastern citizens cannot be tolerated. He demanded a swift investigation and strict action against those responsible.
On the same day, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also reacted strongly, describing the alleged assault as โshockingโ and urging immediate action. He expressed frustration over repeated attacks targeting Northeastern residents living in mainland India.
According to early reports, the victims were walking through a park near the court complex when a group of youths allegedly made racially abusive remarks. When the woman objected, the situation escalated into a physical confrontation.
Both leaders said that such incidents cannot be considered normal and called on authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of people from the Northeast.
Sources indicated that the pair had faced similar harassment in the area on previous occasions.
