Imphal: Tension prevailed in Ukhrul district on Saturday (April 25) after an Assam Rifles convoy allegedly forced its way through barricades set up by villagers at Talui village, with locals claiming that two civilians were injured in the incident.
According to locals, the convoy was travelling from Ukhrul headquarters around 1:00 pm when it encountered barricades erected by residents at the entrance of Talui. Villagers had reportedly set up these barriers to monitor vehicle movement amid the prevailing tense situation in the hill district.
Sources alleged that as the convoy moved through the area, several rounds of gunfire were heard, triggering panic among residents . Eyewitness accounts claimed that people rushed indoors for safety as the situation escalated.
Locals further stated that before reaching Hoomi, residents again attempted to stop the convoy, following which more firing allegedly took place.
According to reports, a woman from Talui village and a man from Hoomi sustained injuries in the incident. They were immediately rushed to Ukhrul District Hospital for treatment, though their medical condition was not immediately known.
There has been no official statement from the Assam Rifles or district authorities so far, and the exact sequence of events could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in parts of Manipur, where the movement of security forces and restrictions imposed on civilians continue to remain highly sensitive issues.
