Three arrested including two from Assam as security forces seize suspected brown sugar and heroin in Manipur.

Imphal: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Manipur, security forces arrested three individuals, including two residents of Assam and seized suspected brown sugar and heroin believed to have originated from Myanmar during separate operations carried out over the past 36 hours.

In the first operation, conducted around 1 pm on Monday, a joint team comprising the Special Operation Team (SOT) of Senapati District Police, the 78 Battalion CRPF and the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the 109 Battalion CRPF carried out a frisking and checking drive at the T. Khullen checkpoint in Senapati district.

During the operation, officials intercepted a Hyundai Grand i10 bearing registration number AS01LC9436 and discovered 12 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar concealed inside the vehicle’s spare tyre.

The occupants of the vehicle, identified as Nasimuddin (38) and Monjit (25), both hailing from Assam‘s Golaghat district, were taken into custody. Security personnel also seized two mobile phones, the vehicle’s registration certificate and Rs 4,000 in cash. A case has been registered at Senapati Police Station for further investigation.

In a separate operation later the same day, security forces apprehended Nongmaithem Rupu Singh (38), a resident of Sapam Mamang Leikai in Thoubal district, from the Keithelmanbi area under New Keithelmanbi Police Station in Imphal West district.

Authorities recovered 58 grams of heroin packed in five soap cases from his possession, along with a Tata Tanker bullet. Two separate cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2023 and further investigation is underway.
