Manipur Rifles night duty kills self with service rifle

Imphal: A Manipur Rifles jawan allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle in the state’s Chandel district on Tuesday (September 3, 2024) night.

The 29-year-old rifleman was on sentry duty in the barracks along the Indo-Myanmar international border when the incident happened at around 9.30 pm, officials said on Wednesday.

The other jawans of the battalion were resting inside the barracks when the incident took place. On hearing the gunshot, the jawans rushed to the gate and discovered the body of Divi Lawai Lamkang lying in a pool of blood, the police said.

The service weapon of the deceased was recovered from the spot. On being informed, a team from the Chandel police station along with forensic experts arrived on the spot and initiated the inquest proceedings.

After recovering the body, the police sent it to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East for a post-mortem examination.

Police are investigating the reason behind the act.
