Imphal: The Manipur Police on Wednesday arrested a 51-year-old man, who allegedly looted Rs 6.49 lakh from the Kakching Bazar branch of UCO Bank, within a week of the crime.

The police recovered more than Rs 3 lakh, weapons and a few masks used during the crime committed on October 17 this year, from the possession of the accused.

Police said the arrest and subsequent recovery of the items were made based on technical analysis.

The police were able to confirm the identity of the suspect after going through all the CCTV footage in and around the bank, and questioning of the bank staff and customers present during the crime.

The armed man, speaking in Hindi, soon overpowers the staff and takes one of them at gunpoint.

The accused then asks the staff to hand over all the cash and soon decamps with the booty.

The police soon launched a massive manhunt finally getting hold of the accused after relentless efforts.

The accused has been identified as Naorem Romeo, a resident of Kakching Panji Leikai area under the jurisdiction of Kakching Police Station.

Meanwhile, the police have initiated legal proceedings.
