Guwahati: A college girl in Guwahati, Assam was allegedly cyberstalked and harassed by a man who created and circulated morphed obscene pictures of her and her friends online.

The Guwahati Police through its Crime Branch team arrested the accused, Md Billal Hussain, after a months-long investigation.

The incident as per police began in September 2023 when the victim, along with a few of her friends, all college students, started receiving unsolicited calls and messages.

The accused, who identified himself under various aliases including Nabajit Nath and Nabajit Talukdar, sent vulgar messages and morphed pictures.

He even threatened the girls with dire consequences if they revealed his identity.

The investigation revealed that Hussain had befriended one of the victims online, posing as someone else. He gained her trust and even took control of her WhatsApp account for a period.

However, upon discovering his real identity, the victim and her friends cut off communication with him.

This enraged Hussain, who then resorted to creating and circulating the morphed pictures.

“Based on technical analysis and human intelligence, the accused was traced to Bangalore, Karnataka,” informed police in an official statement.

“He was identified as Md Billal Hussain, a resident of Dhula, Assam, who was deliberately concealing his true identity”, police shared.

The Crime Branch team tracked Hussain down to his hometown in Dhula, Darrang where he was arrested on April 24, 2024.

He “confessed to his crimes”, and the police have recovered his mobile phone and SIM cards used in the harassment.

Hussain has been produced before the court and remanded to police custody for five days.
