Imphal: Security forces intensified anti-drug and counter-insurgency operations across Manipur on July 1, resulting in the seizure of more than 2 kg of suspected heroin in Imphal East and the arrest of two active valley-based insurgent cadres in Imphal West. Simultaneously, authorities continued large-scale security measures to safeguard key highways and vulnerable areas across the state.

According to police, a coordinated series of operations carried out on June 30 and July 1 targeted narcotics trafficking, insurgent networks and criminal activities, leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of significant contraband.

In one of the major operations, security personnel intercepted a four-wheeler in the Porompat area on July 1 and arrested two occupants Bigyan Baniya (21) of Tuilaphai in Kangpokpi district and Manoj Chettry (27) of Kohima, Nagaland. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 168 soap cases containing suspected Heroin No. 4, weighing about 2 kg. The narcotics, along with the vehicle, were seized.

On the same day, Manipur Police arrested an alleged active cadre of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), identified as Oinam Kalajit alias Yaikhomba Singh (55) of Ngairangbam Mayai Leikai, from Taobungkhok under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district. Police said he was involved in the illegal transportation of arms and ammunition.

In a separate operation on June 30, another alleged PLA cadre, Sairem Bolex Singh alias Pamel (26) of Yurembam Mayai Leikai, was apprehended from Sagoltongba Makha Leikai under the jurisdiction of Patsoi Police Station. He is also accused of involvement in extortion-related activities.

Security agencies have also stepped up measures to ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities across the state. On July 1, security forces facilitated the safe passage of 531 vehicles along National Highway-37 by deploying convoy escorts and maintaining enhanced security along vulnerable stretches.

Officials said area domination patrols and search operations are continuing in sensitive hill and valley districts to prevent any disruption to law and order. A total of 115 checkpoints (Nakas) have been established across the state to strengthen surveillance and curb the movement of anti-social and insurgent elements.
