Imphal: A partially decomposed body of an unidentified man was recovered from a forested area at Parengba Khunthak in Kangpokpi district, adding to the growing tensions prevailing in the region. The recovery was made within the jurisdiction of New Keithelmanbi Police Station.
In a statement, police said the deceased is believed to be between 25 and 35 years old. He was found dressed in blue jeans, a multi-coloured T-shirt and wearing a ring on one finger. Investigators noted that the victim had been blindfolded, with both hands tied behind his back, suggesting possible foul play.
The body has been shifted to the mortuary of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, for identification and further legal formalities. Police said that if no claimant comes forward, the body will be disposed of in accordance with legal procedures after July 8.
The discovery comes as Kangpokpi district continues to witness heightened unrest. Members of the Kuki-Zo community across Sadar Hills have launched an indefinite, round-the-clock protest at Gamgiphai following a recent confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel.
At the centre of the agitation is the continued blockade at Namduilong-Kanglatongbi and other stretches of National Highway-2. Protesters have organised 24-hour shifts to monitor vehicular movement, insisting that the government remove the obstructions to restore the unrestricted movement of people and ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities.
Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) spokesperson Ng Lun Kipgen said the Kuki-Zo community is awaiting government action to clear areas that they allege are under the control of those enforcing the economic blockade, particularly around Namduilong-Kanglatongbi. He asserted that the ongoing agitation will continue until free and unhindered traffic is restored along the crucial highway.
