Guwahati: The bodies of six Naga civilians who were abducted last month and later recovered in Manipur were transported to the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal during the early hours of Thursday, as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) intensified its probe into the case.

According to officials, the remains reached the medical institute at approximately 2:30 am after being retrieved during a security-led search operation. Soon after their arrival, NIA personnel, supported by forensic specialists and other investigating authorities, began detailed examinations as part of efforts to establish the sequence of events leading to the deaths.

Investigators are conducting scientific assessments and collecting forensic evidence to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the killings. The six victims were among a group of civilians allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13.

The development sparked unrest at the JNIMS campus on Wednesday night after news spread that the bodies would be brought there for post-mortem procedures. A large crowd gathered outside the hospital premises, resulting in heightened tension in the area.

As the situation became increasingly volatile, confrontations reportedly broke out between sections of the gathering and security personnel stationed at the site. In response, Manipur Police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent the disturbance from escalating further.

Additional security forces were later deployed around the hospital complex, and authorities succeeded in restoring order. Security arrangements have since been strengthened to avoid any further disruption during the investigation and post-mortem process.

The recovery of the six bodies has generated widespread anger and concern across several parts of the state. Various organisations and community groups have called for a thorough investigation and demanded that those responsible for the abductions and killings be brought to justice at the earliest.

The NIA is continuing its inquiry, with further findings expected as forensic examinations and evidence collection progress.
