“Without blaming monsoon, the deplorable condition of NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) always haunts the mind of the people and the Government of Manipur. With frequent bandhs and blockades along NH 2 (Imphal-Dimapur road) the need for improving Imphal-Jiribam road as an all-weather second lifeline has always been felt,” MP Dr Meinya was quoted as saying in the day’s Lok Sabha session according to the press communiqué.

Stating that the then Prime Minister had assured that development work along Imphal-Jiribam road would be completed by 2013, the MP also added that the present Prime Minister had also assured that this work would be completed within 100 days of the formation of his new Government in 2014.

Claiming that the condition of NH 37 remains non-serviceable as usual, he said, “I demand for the immediate completion of the construction of RCC bridges and make this NH 37 at least a two-lane all weather road. I also request the establishment of dedicated National Highways Protection Security Forces to regulate flow of passenger and goods vehicles round the clock.”

Manipur MP Dr Meinya’s move in the day’s Parliament session came a day the massive landslide at Phesama area in neighbouring Nagaland’s Kohima district which forced to block the movement of Manipur bound good trucks on Saturday and Sunday.

Earlier in the intervening night of July 7 and 8, a highway stretch measuring around 100 metres near Kohima town in Nagaland sank following incessant rain and it forced to strand hundreds of Manipur bound good trucks along the highway in Nagaland.
