Guwahati: A large public demonstration was held in Kangpokpi district on Friday as members of the Kuki-Zo community gathered to press for justice over the deaths of three church leaders and to demand the safe return of 14 individuals reported missing from the community.
The march, organised by Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), witnessed participation from thousands of residents, including religious leaders, womenโs groups, youth organisations and representatives of various civil society bodies. The procession commenced from Brig. M. Thomas Ground and moved along National Highway-2 before reaching the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Addressing the gathering, community representatives voiced concern over the recent killings of the church leaders and urged authorities to expedite investigations into the incident. They stressed the importance of identifying those responsible and ensuring legal action is taken in accordance with the law.
Participants also highlighted the plight of 14 Kuki-Zo individuals who are reportedly being held in Senapati district. Community leaders appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts for their safe release.
Religious leaders attending the programme called for peace and mutual understanding, while emphasizing the need to uphold justice and protect the rights of all communities. Speakers noted that lasting peace in Manipur could only be achieved through accountability, dialogue and respect for human rights.
Following the rally, a delegation comprising KIM officials and representatives from allied organisations met Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari and handed over a memorandum intended for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The memorandum outlined several demands, including a fair probe into the killings, immediate steps to secure the release of the missing individuals, stronger security arrangements in Kuki-Zo dominated areas and measures to rebuild trust among affected communities.
The organisation further urged the Centre to continue engaging with stakeholders and accelerate efforts toward a political settlement that addresses the concerns of the Kuki-Zo people.
The event concluded without any untoward incident, with participants reaffirming their intention to pursue their demands through peaceful and democratic means.
