With the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Communist Party of India (CPI) of Manipur has finalized Moraingthem Nara Singh as the nominee from the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency.

The CPI is busy campaigning for its candidate Nara, reports TOI.

The Inner Manipur constituency covers Imphal West, Imphal  East, Bishnupur and parts of Thoubal district of the state and will go to the polls on April 18.

Although the CPI could not win even a single seat in the last two assembly polls, the party is confident of winning the Inner Manipur seat.

CPI general secretary Laishram Sotinkumar said that they campaign only by conducting village and local level meetings and do not spend extravagantly on campaigns like the BJP and Congress.

Nara was elected to the assembly thrice from the Wanjing Tentha constituency in Thoubal district on a CPI ticket. Wanjing Tentha constituency is a stronghold of the CPI.

Nara Singh holds a medical degree in homeopathy from Calcutta Homeopathy Medical College. He joined the CPI in 1973 and became an MLA in 1985. He held the portfolio of culture and is known as “man of culture”. He is also a strong advocate of “culture for peace”.

Last month, the CPI had decided to announce Nara as its party candidate in an executive body meeting of the party.

The CPI has been taking active part in various issues of the state including the issue of border pillar controversy, Manipur University VC fiasco, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 among others.
