Imphal: The 24-hour total shutdown called by 13 organisations in Manipur on Wednesday disrupted normal life in the violence-hit state, particularly in the five valley districts.

All marketplaces, business establishments, educational institutions and banks remained closed due to the shutdown.

Public transport has been off the roads since the shutdown began at 6 pm on Tuesday.

The otherwise busy thoroughfares of the valley districts wore a deserted look.

All interstate modes of transport have come to a complete halt, cutting off Manipur from the rest of the country by road. However, flight services continued as usual.

Movement of security vehicles were seen at strategic locations across the state.

Essential services, including medical facilities, water supply and religious functions were exempted from the purview of the shutdown.

However, no untoward incidents have been reported so far.

The shutdown has been called by the All Club Organisation Association and Meira Paibi Lup (ACOAM-Lup), International Peace and Social (IPSA), People’s Action for National Democratic Movement (PANDM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Indigenous People’s Association of Kangleipak (IPAK) and Loumee Yaipha Lup, Kangleipak (Loyalup).

The other organisations are Economic and Resource Development Organisation (ERDO), Kangla Mei, Chanura Lamchinglel Kangleipak (CLK), Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL), Apunba Kanglei Sinnaibi Lup (AKSIL), Malem Ima Kanba Lup (MIKL) and Struggling Women’s Association (SWA).

These organisations have been demanding the rescue of six Meitei civilians allegedly abducted by Kuki militants, the arrest of those involved in the killing of Sofia, a farmer from Bishnupur district’s Wathalambi and the free movement of all vehicles along the National Highways passing through the state.
