Imphal: Fresh exchanges of gunfire between rival groups from the Kuki and Naga communities were reported in Manipur‘s Kangpokpi district on Saturday morning, resulting in casualties, according to local reports.

The incident reportedly began around 8:40 AM when armed militants launched an attack on Langka (Taniuluang) village. The ensuing exchange of fire lasted for nearly 30 minutes before security forces moved into the area. State and central security personnel were subsequently deployed to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

In a statement issued to local media, the Langka (Taniuluang) Village Authority (LVA) strongly condemned the attack on the Naga village. The village authority alleged that armed cadres belonging to the Kuki National Front (Progressive) [KNF(P)], a signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government, were involved in the assault.

The LVA further claimed that a militant camp located at Bileljang village, allegedly associated with the KNF (Nehlun) faction, operated under the command of KNF(P) Home Secretary Jangboi Kipigen. According to the village authority, Kipigen oversees Kuki militant groups in Kangpokpi district under both SoO and non-SoO arrangements. The authority held these groups responsible for the attack on Langka village.

The statement also expressed concern over the possibility of further attacks on Naga villages situated along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road corridor. The incident comes amid heightened tensions following the recent killing of six Naga individuals, whose bodies were allegedly mutilated.

According to the LVA, the attackers used heavy weapons and explosive devices during the assault, creating fear and insecurity among residents. The village authority urged the state government to conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the incident and identify those responsible.

The LVA specifically called for action against members of the KNF (Nehlun) faction allegedly operating from the villages of Lasan, Songpibung, Baleijang, Haimol and Laloi. It also appealed to all stakeholders to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law and work towards preventing any further escalation of violence in the region.
