According to information, Maj Gen Kalita is among the 10 (Major General) officers whose names have been cleared for elevation (promotion).
The list of Army officers, who have been elevated to the post of Lieutenant General includes MG CP Cariappa, Rajrif; MG Shantanu Dayal, Garhrif; MG RP Kalita, Kumaon; MG Anil Puri, ENGRS (GC); MG Upendra Dwivedi, Jakrif and MG PNA Narayanan, 8 GR (Staff).
Major General Kalita, who hails from Rangiya in Assam’s Kamrup (rural) district, is an alumnus of the Sainik School Goalpara of Assam.
Maj Gen Kalita, who was commissioned in the Army in 9th Kumaon Regiment in 1984, is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy.
He has held several coveted posts, including the BGS (Ops) at 15th Corps, Srinagar, commanded the 19th infantry division, commanded the 13th Rashtriya Rifles and the 71st Infantry Brigade at Lucknow.
Maj Gen Kalita was also an instructor in the Officer Training Academy.
The Army officer from Assam was earlier conferred with Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his meritorious services.
It was reported that Maj gen Kalita was intimately involved in the last journey of former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee.
In the funeral ceremony of the former Prime Minister, which was conducted by the Indian Army in the most professional and flawless manner, Major General Rana Pratap Kalita was responsible for the coordination of the event last year.
Maj Gen Kalita was given the responsibility as he was serving as the additional director general (ceremonial and welfare) in the Army Headquarters in New Delhi.
Maj Gen Rana Pratap Kalita was conferred with ‘Ati Vishisht Sewa Medal’ for his remarkable contributions to the nation during his tenure as the general officer commanding of Baramula Division in Kashmir Valley.
