Eight candidates have so far filed nominations for five Lok Sabha constituencies which are going to polls on April 11.

Officials of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam here said this on Saturday adding that eight candidates including sitting MP from Kaliabar, Gaurav Gogoi and sitting MP from Dibrugarh Rameswar Teli have filed nominations.

Nominations for the first phase of polls will have to be filed on or before March 25. Five constituencies—Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Kaliabar–are going to polls during the first phase to be held on April 11.

“Gaurav Gogoi (Congress) and Bhaskar Sarmah (Independent filed nominations from Kaliabar while one Kanak Gogoi have filed nominations on a CPI ticket  from Jorhat followed by Sushanta Borgohain filed nomination on a Congress ticket from the constituency,” the officials said.

Similarly, they said, in Lakhimpur constituency, one Anil Borgohain has filed nomination on a Congress ticket while one Hem Kanta Miri had filed nomination from SUCI (Communist) party. Independent candidate,  Ziabur Rahman Khan have filed his nomination from Tezpur constituency,” the officials said.

The 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam are going to polls on three phases—on April 11, April 18 and on April 23. There are a total of 2, 17, 60,604 eligible electorates in Assam this time including 1, 06, 27,822 females.

A total of 75,16,284 electorates are set to cast their votes during the first phase of polling in Assam on April 11, an estimated 68,36,494 voters will cast their votes in the second phase on April 18. A total of 74, 07,824 voters set to cast their votes in the third phase of polling on April 23

Polls will be held across 28,143 polling stations across the state, including includes 3,663 hyper sensitive and 1,913 critical polling stations.
