Left Front in Tripura on Friday demanded the state election commissioner G K Rao to defer the date of the Panchayat by-election as the situation is not conducive for conducting an election in the state.

Addressing a press conference here CPI-M spokesperson Gautam Das alleged that people have lost their democratic rights after BJP-IPFT came to power.

Das said not only the Opposition even the coalition partner of the ruling government has demanded the rescheduling of the election.

Das said the State Election Commission is helpless as the government is not cooperating with it.

According to the CPI-M spoken person, BJP has terrorized opponents and prevented other political party candidates from submitting nomination papers and hence in large numbers of seats BJP candidates have been declared winner without any contest. “This is a bad omen for democracy,” Das said.

When asked as to why BJP which just came to power only six months back with an absolute majority will do so, Das said, “People of the state in this period of six months realized that BJP is unable to fulfill any of its pre-poll promises. Thus anger of people may get reflected in the vote and so BJP doesn’t want to take any risk.”
